Yep, it's my turn for problems with my Generac generator. It starts and runs and will power the fridge and converter, but not the microwave or the A/C. When I turn on the microwave or the A/C, I hear a rapid clicking (like a relay)sound in the inverter and the generator runs about 30 seconds and shuts down. The voltage jumps up and down rapidly between 120 and 108 volts. I assume there's a problem with the inverter, but at $800, I want to be sure that's the problem. I called the Generac number for authorized service centers near our home and there are two listed for Longview, TX which is 40 miles away. I'll be calling them to see when I can get in appointment next week.
If I knew of a complete conversion package that I could buy to convert to an Onan, I'd be tempted to get it. Bill This message has been edited. Update:
Because of other commitments, I had not taken our Lance to the Generac authorized repair shop, Eldon RV Repair, Greenville, TX, until last Monday, September 8th. The service center diagnosed that the printed circuit board has failed. The generator is out of the camper and on the workbench waiting for the replacement circuit board to arrive. I have brought the camper home and it's parked inside my steel building because of approaching Hurricane Ike. I didn't want to leave it out in the wind and rain setting on the repair center parking on the jacks. Our weather forecast for Saturday is for 60-70 MPH wind gusts and 8-10" of rain. My Generac 4000XL portable generator may get some running time. Yes, I have the Generac with the separate inverter. I want to find a tech who can trouble shoot my generator and determine if it's the inverter or another component. I may have found a RV repair center about 60 miles away who works on Generac generators. I'll be taking my Lance to them in the next few days to see if they can diagnose the problem. Thank you very much for the offer. Is yours the Generac with the separate inverter? If so I have a used inverter that I think is still good. I recently bought one of Generac's last generators that fit in the 820 and had the inverter portion left over.

Yep, Big Rig, I've checked the connections. I wouldn't be that lucky. Lance replaced the inverter when the camper was still in warranty. The original inverter was giving off hot electrical component smell when the generator was run for any length of time. A couple of months ago when exercising the generator, it gave off a slight smell of hot electrical components again.
I looked at an online trouble shooting flow chart, but couldn't find an example of the exact problem I have. Similar problems lead to a defective inverter, and/or circuit board, or possibly a defective stator. I'm hoping to find a service tech who has some knowledge and experience with this particular generator. I want to avoid "throwing" expensive parts at it. Wow Bill, 800 smackers for an inverter. Sounds like that may be your problem but did you check the input side of the inverter also to see what is happening there? That might help you confirm the problem or point you in another direction.
It sure would be nice if it was just something real simple, like something loose. Big Rig 2004.5 Dodge 3500 SLT Quad, 5.9 CTD, LWB, DRW, LSD, 48RE, 3.73 2004 Lance 920, Frame Mount Happijacs, Cabover Struts, air, gen, solar, Trojan SCS225 battery, no front window |
