I am heading to the Sandhills of Nebraska on Saturday. I am attending my first Nebraska Star Party. Several hundred folks gather to look at the stars out in the middle of nowhere because there is little light pollution there. This will be a solo trip as my wife is not interested. I will be boondocking for the week. Two of us can go almost 5 days without dumping the tanks so a week without dumping for just me ought to be a piece of cake. I may take the camper off the truck so the 50 watt solar panel will have to keep the battery charged. I don't plan on using much battery juice so that should work out ok. The only thing I might run a lot is the Fantastic fan to help cool the camper down in the evening.
Has anyone ever set up out in the middle of nowhere to look at the stars? Big Rig 2004.5 Dodge 3500 SLT Quad, 5.9 CTD, LWB, DRW, LSD, 48RE, 3.73 2004 Lance 920, Frame Mount Happijacs, Cabover Struts, air, gen, solar, Trojan SCS225 battery, no front window |

Yep, we do at a couple of our Texas State Parks. South Llano River State Park near Junction on the western edge of the Texas Hill Country and Copper Breaks State Park between Quanah and Crowell in the Rolling Plains area. Both parks are far away from the city light pollution. We are amazed how many stars are visible in the sky when we get a couple of hundred miles away from the lights of the Dallas-Fort Worth area. When the weather is nice, we sit outside after dark in our chairs and enjoy looking at the stars. We go the the parks during the week and are usually the only ones staying overnight in the park which is the way we love it... peace and quiet!! Big Rig - Sounds like a great trip. Star-gazing is wonderful stuff.
We took the boat out at Lake Berryessa, and did the same out on the Lake. As far as boondocking... we've stayed out at Clear Creek... a whole lot of nothing out there but dirt bike trails. It was a great time. 1994 Lance 990, Chevy Silvarado Ext 3500, 4WD, Dually |

The Nebraska Star Party was great. I was at Merritt Reservoir 27 miles southwest of Valentine, Nebraska. This is a state park. The daily entry fee is $3.00 & the annual fee is $17.50. Primitive camping fee is $5.00. Only one campground around the lake has electrical & water hookups. There is a dump station along the highway a short distance south of the dam & the Resort.
This is a really neat lake. The water is clear & the shoreline is one big beach, being in the Sandhills the shoreline is all sand. Great for swimming. The days were warm but the nights were always cool. I opened the camper windows & slept like a baby. If you like to fish for walleye, you will like this lake. There are boat ramps for those of you that bring boats.
